Daqi Lacquered Necklace DIY Kit | Fish

We’ve been experimenting with modern ways to lay raden (mother-of-pearl), and this little fish has completely stolen our hearts! In Chinese, ‘fish’ (鱼, Yú) sounds like ‘savings’ (馀), which got us thinking—this tiny swimmer isn’t just cute, it’s a symbol of abundance, prosperity, and the art of saving for the future. Whether it’s money, food, or resources, it’s always a good idea to stash a little something for a rainy day.

Now, you can bring this meaningful symbol to life with your own hands! If you’ve ever wanted to try Da Qi (lacquer) arts but weren’t sure where to start, this kit is the perfect beginner-friendly intro. It comes with everything you need—premium lacquer, raden pieces, tools, and materials—so you can dive right in.

And don’t worry, you’re not doing this alone! We’ve put together a detailed step-by-step video tutorial, so it’s like having a crafty friend from China right there with you, showing you the ropes. Whether you're making it for yourself or as a unique handmade gift, this little fish is ready to bring some creativity (and good fortune) your way!

The Timeless Art of Chinese Lacquerware

Lacquerware 漆器(Qī qì) is one of China’s most treasured traditional crafts, with a history spanning thousands of years. Made using sap from the lacquer tree 大漆, this unique art form combines natural materials with intricate techniques to create stunning, durable pieces that can last for generations.

Lacquer Harvesting

The process of harvesting natural lacquer 大漆 is as fascinating as the craft itself. Lacquer is collected by making small incisions in the bark of the lacquer tree 漆树, allowing the tree’s sap to slowly drip out. This sap, known as raw lacquer 生漆, is then filtered and processed to become the rich, glossy material used in lacquerware. Harvesting requires precision, patience, and deep respect for the tree, as the process is done sustainably to ensure the tree’s health and longevity.

Lacquer Refinement

Once harvested, the raw lacquer undergoes a critical refining process 精炼 to transform it into a usable, durable form. Through continuous stirring and heating, the raw lacquer turns into a new form known as matured lacquer 透明漆. This half-transparent, dark-brownish liquid is a vital step in the process. Matured lacquer has the perfect consistency for adding colored pigments or providing the final glossy finish to lacquerware. Its rich, translucent quality allows for layers of color to shine through, giving the finished pieces their distinctive sheen.

A Labor of Love

Crafting lacquerware is a time-intensive process requiring patience and expertise. Multiple layers of refined lacquer are applied, with each layer carefully dried, sanded, and polished. Depending on the design, artisans may incorporate intricate details like raden inlays 螺钿 (crafted from shells) or gold leaf 金箔 to enhance the piece’s beauty.
